Brigid is a Celtic fire goddess celebrated at the beginning of February (Imbolc/Candlemas.) Catholics adopted her as a saint. She has connections with poetry, science, medicine, midwifery, and as a patron of blacksmiths. She represents the waking of the land after Yule and the pregnancy of the ewes as well as young spring lambs. Imbolc means in the belly. From her we get the words bride and bridal. Indeed when we think about lovers eloping to the blacksmiths at Gretna Green, we can see horse connotations from lucky horse shoes to the bride and groom.
